Mona’s Birthday

Originally uploaded by Monatopia.

First off, thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate my birthday last week! Even those poor souls who ended up at the right place at the wrong time. Wah! Sorry to have missed you! Also, thanks to everyone who brought gifts! And I think I speak for everyone when I say, Traci, thank you not only for the shirt you gave me, but the shirt you wore. :-))

We started out at Beauty Bar with some extremely well crafted cocktails and a bartender who apparently likes to do shots with birthday girls. Oh My. Off to a great start on an empty stomach. Then to Majool where, much to the horror of the waitstaff we tried – succesfully I might add, to pack like, 27 people into our reservation for like, 10. Majool is a great tapas place in the Mission with a must see rooftop bar. If you’re ever in the Mission on a sunny day with some time to kill, do check it out. Simply amazing views of the city to enjoy while you have a cocktail and a tasty snack.

BTW, Tapas on the roof top – Excellent. Tapas, after shots on an empty stomach… not the cure-all you would think it would be.

Afterwards we tried to pack ourselves into Doc’s Clock, but being that we had already been packed in all evening, we decided to look for someplace a bit less crowded, so on to Dope House! Several in our crowd were rather disappointed to find out that Dope House is not some cool little unknown dive bar, but… Arshad’s House which is more of a cool little unknown lounge. Excellent cocktail though!

Drinks were made. Paddy cake was played. Pictures where taken. And if someone could explain the picture on the blog this week, that would be swell.

So this week we are off to someplace new! First we have dinner reservations at Sneaky Tiki at 6:30. Please RSVP and let me know if you will be making it for dinner. I’m not sure these guys will be as jovial about 27 people showing up for my reservation for 8. They do offer apps in the lounge if you can’t make it at 6:30 or don’t want to do the full sit down dinner thing. Afterwards we will check out the bar at Sneaky Tiki, gather the non-dinner eaters, and head to Annie’s Social Club and possible Punk Rock Kareoke.

A Very Special Cocktail Confidential Happy Hour…

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

This week’s Happy Hour is brought to you by me instead of Mona… we are giving her the week off because it’s her BIRTHDAY tomorrow (Jan 20)!

That is, we are not giving her the week off from ATTENDING, just the PLANNING.

Last week, Mona did not quite get to sit in a comfy chair at The Hidden Vine, but we did get to navigate a difficult and odd wine list to find a great little Pinot Noir (and I mean little – it was a 500ml bottle). From there we went to a disappointing meal at this Turkish restaurant on Geary. The last time we went it was amazing, but this time they were off, or we did not order the right things…. Or… just maybe… we were a little too drunk last time. Then we trudged through the rain to Lush (not the band) on Polk, only to find it packed with folks we didn’t feel like standing close to. So we ended up at a great bar called Blur (not the band), where Mona finally got to sit in a comfy chair.

This week I am picking the venue… and there is no place more fitting for Beautiful Mona’s Birthday Happy Hour than the Beauty Bar in the Mission (well, except maybe the Ritz Carlton, but that might prove a little pricey when we all start ordering $50 glasses of Scotch). .

So… come visit the Birthday Girl at the Beauty Bar… manicure, pedicure, and Cosmos will be in great supply.

I suggest you bring presence… I mean presents. Mona likes pink stuff, porn, Apple, Belladonna, Shoes, boobies, and camera equipment. If you combine any of these, please clear it with me first.

Happy Hour will commence at 6:30… and after dinner we hope to drag Mona somewhere with Karaoke!

Speakeasy cuisine / Guided by word-of-mouth, diners flock to unlicensed restaurants for good food at bargain-basement prices

I need to find one of these places… or perhaps, create one. Hmmm….

AVN Gone Wrong

Originally uploaded by Monatopia.

Look at me all posting this a day in advance! And freshly back from Vegas and ready for the first Cocktail Confidentail Happy Hour of the year!!

Ok, maybe recently returned from Vegas would be a better way to put that.

Vegas was, as always a bit to full of Happy Hours, Rough Mornings and Walking. Both shows (AVN and CES) where great, although I would have to agree with the Crazy Cabbie (yes, of course we nearly died in a cab in Vegas. Isn’t that a required part of the stay??) that maybe having AVN and CES at the same time might be a bit too much. Or maybe I’m getting old.

Scott made some great business contacts. I was molested by both the gay boys of StraightCollegeMen.com (I think they really may be straight) and Ron Jeremy. We both discovered that you CAN have three dinners in one night and not die. Just wish you could. I think the hot new bar in Vegas would have to be Tryst in the Wynn – complete with water fall in the center of it, and the hot new restaurant would DEFINITELY have to be Daniel Boulud also at the Wynn complete with a Truffled Foie Gras Kobe Short Rib Burger. Oh and a VERY hot pastry chef. OK, I love the Wynn, but Wynn aside, those two places rock!

This week, in much need of a rest, I have found a promising looking wine bar near Union Square. Reviews say there are lots of nocks and crannies to relax in, lots of over stuffed comfy chairs, a huge wine menu and several interesting meat and cheese plates to enjoy. What’s not to love? I guess we will find out. Come to happy hour this week and you can hear some more stories about CES and AVN.

I will be there at 6:30 this Friday the 13th. Please let me know if you will make it so we can save you a place.

Aside from nearly forgetting to celebrate the whole midnight thing, it was a great New Years Eve party! Now that I am exhausted nearly out of my mind from all the holiday activities, Scott and I are off to Vegas for CES etc. I’m not entirely sure where Happy Hour in Vegas will be this friday, but I’m certain it will be a memorable one.

If any of you are in Vegas this Friday, give us a call. I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up at Mandeley Bay.

However, it’s Vegas during CES and AVN. I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up on the moon.
